I woke up around 8.30ish,
and once I was ready met Taylor in the hostel kitchen. I went to Aldi to get
some breakfast, which was in the Canberra Centre. It was only supposed to be 10
minutes away, but I somehow managed to get lost.
We ate breakfast together,
and then headed out into the city. Our first stop was the Canberra Gallery,
which had loads of info about Canberra and how it was established. It also had
loads of info about local aboriginals, which was interesting to see.
Randomly, there was an
entire exhibit dedicated to Doctor Who. A local Canberra teacher was trying to
break the world record for the largest collection of Doctor Who memorabilia, so
it was displayed at the museum. It was pretty cool.
We then tried to get the
bus to Parliament. It took us ages to work out where the busses were and how we
needed to get there. In hindsight, we should have asked at the hostel before we
left. Having been used to how easy it was in Melbourne, it was really confusing
as there was barely any signs and no staff around to ask.
We thought we figured it
out but we then tried to get on the wrong bus. Luckily the bus drivers
themselves were really helpful and told us which one we needed. We eventually
managed to find the right route and got dropped off at Old Parliament. We
looked at that building from the outside and then walked to the New Parliament
building.
We were just in time for
a New Parliament building tour, so we got to learn about the history of
Australian politics, and see the great hall, parliament and senate chambers.
Our tour guide Michael was quite eccentric, but knew so much about history. We
walked through a corridor with portraits of all the previous prime ministers
off Australia.
After the tour was over,
Taylor and I went back through the building to take some photos. We then got in
a lift to go on the roof, which apparently you can only do in Australian
parliament. The view of Canberra was incredible!
We had some tea and a fruit salad in the Cafe and then went outside to take some more photos. We then headed back into the city.
