After the walk back to
the top of the Valley, we drove to Scenic World. There were lots of different
attractions there that you could go on out in the mountains. It had the world’s
steepest railway, the highest and biggest cable car in Australia and the
longest boardwalk in the Southern Hemisphere. It also had the biggest gift shop I had seen
so far!
We decided the first
thing we would do was to get the cable car down into the valley. I’m not scared
of heights but it was really scary when the ground just disappeared and
suddenly you were 200m up in the air.
We walked along the forest
boardwalk which took us to the Scenic Railway.
On the way we saw an old coal
mine and a display of some of the old tools that have been found down there.
The railway was SO steep
the pictures don’t do it justice. When you got in to the cart, you could choose
the angle of your seat, ‘laid back’, ‘original’, or ‘cliff-hanger’. We
obviously went for cliff-hanger which was really scary when the train started.
I had to hang on as I thought I was going to fall forwards.
When we got to the top we
went to go on the Sky Rail, which takes you across the valley from one side of
the mountains to the other. The queue was really long so James and I got some
lunch and then went and joined it. The gift shop was absolutely huge so I also
did some shopping.
The sky rail was really
cool and seriously high at 270m above ground. During the crossing we saw Katoomba
waterfall which was gorgeous.
We were running low on
time, so we got the Skyway straight back to Scenic World and then headed to go
back down on the railway. We did the cliff-hanger again, although I was much
more prepared this time and made sure I was hanging on properly. The views were
incredible!
We walked in the valley
for a while, and then headed to get the cable car to the top. On the way up we
saw Orphan Rock, which you used to be able to walk onto, but it collapsed and was now too dangerous.
We left Scenic World and
drove back to Katoomba for dinner. We went to a pub called the Alex Hotel, where we were traditionally English and got bangers and mash. It was a couple of hours drive back to Sydney and I was so tired I fell asleep in the car again.
We made a quick stop at
where James works to pick up some cardboard tubing and bubble wrap for the wine
I bought. After South Africa when the wine bottle cracked and leaked on
everything in my suitcase, I didn’t want to take any chances. We got back to the
apartment and I was so tired I went straight to bed.
