I got up earlier this
morning to head into Melbourne City to explore. I got the train from Emily's in Blackburn to
Flinders Street Station, which is right in the city centre.
I started by wandering
around Federation Square. I went to the National Gallery of Moving Image which
was really cool. It had loads of info about the history of digital media and how it was developed. There was a life size Minecraft section and a whole area for Neighbors. I got to play on loads of old video games on really old computers.
I then walked along the
river for a bit just taking photos. I was really lucky that the weather was gorgeous.
I ended up at the National Gallery of Victoria, which was really interesting. There were loads of different exhibits including a whole area for Papa New Guinea, which I did a cultural symbolism module on when
I was studying in Hull. I loved looking at all of the aboriginal artwork and culture.
There was also loads of random art, like a crushed beetle and crystal deer. There was a huge seating area with a stunning stain glass window.
I was in the gallery for
a lot longer than I thought I would stay. I then went and walked through the Botanical
Gardens to the Shrine of Remembrance. It was originally a memorial for all Australians in World War 1, but is now used to commemorate all Australians who have served in war.
I wasn’t too keen on
being in the crypts as it felt like I was underground, but it was interesting
to see all the war memorials they had there. There was so much information about each of the wars Australia had been involved in.
I walked back through the
Botanical Gardens, and along the river to head back to Federation Square.
I met Emily at Federation Square, and
we met up with Kath, Loz and Amy for dinner at Transport Bar. It felt like I
hadn’t seen everyone in so long. None of us could believe it when Kath said the
time we hadn’t seen each other was the same time we had been together on tour.
It was SO good to catch
up, I didn’t want the night to end. We drunk lots of wine and chatted for hours
and until we eventually did have to go home. Em and I got the train back to
Blackburn and went straight to bed.
