Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb 28/07/16

I woke up early as I had to be at PeterPans to collect my tickets for everything I had booked the day before by 9am. I sorted out all of my trips and then went straight to Telstra at World Square, a shopping district, to pick up a new phone. Luckily I could keep the same sim and number, but I was gutted to lose all of my texts, especially from my Topdeck friends :(

I ended up going the wrong way when I left World Square, so I had to power walk through George Street to get to my bridge climb for 10.45am. I walked all through the city, which was really cool. Even though I was in a rush, I managed to see the town hall and a few massive churches.

I had to walk to Argle Street to get to the Bridge Climb, which was near to a place called The Rocks, the area with the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. To get to Cumberland Street, where the base for Bridge Climb was, I had to climb Argyle Stairs, which were really steep. I was knackered by the time I got to the top.

I managed to get to the Bridge Climb on time, and I met the rest of my group. I was with two English sisters called Chloe and Sarah, and an Israeli family. Our tour guide was called Kelly, from Scotland. We got given a safety briefing and our suits, which were seriously unflattering. The main rule was that everything we wore had to be attached to our suits, including sunglasses, hats and a fleece they gave us.

We were then given safety belts which is how we would attach ourselves to the bridge. We got to practice on an indoor mock bridge, where we had to climb up and down a few ladders. It seemed easy enough, but that was when the ground was only a few meters away.

I was the first one out onto the bridge behind Kelly. She told us loads of info as we walked up. When they built the bridge, none of the workers were attached in any way, so just had to hold on carrying all their tools. Amazingly only 3 people fell off the entire time.

The first part of the climb was probably the most scary, as we had to walk across a see through platform to get out to the main arch. We could see cars and people directly below us which gave me jelly legs! The views were incredible though, especially as this was the first time I had seen the opera house.

We then had to climb 4 ladders to get up to the arch, which was also pretty scary, as they shook whenever a train went past on the bridge. Once we had got past that point, the ground felt pretty secure. Even though we were high, we were walking up wide stairs on the arch.

We stopped along the way for loads of photos and then gradually made our way to the summit. At the top you could see the whole of Sydney which was so cool!

Kelly took a video of each of us at the top and a group photo.

We then started to climb back down on the opposite side of the bridge. When we got back, I bought the photos and then walked back through The Rocks to Circular Quay, which is the main ferry terminal in Sydney Harbour. I was so happy I got to do the Bridge Climb, as it had been on my bucket list for years!!!
